Wet Carpets and Your Health

Have you experienced the unfortunate situation where a spilled glass of water or a pet’s enthusiasm washed your carpet? The thought of having to clean it up might have made you groan my blog. Hey, if your first instinct is to groan at the thought of cleaning it up, you might think twice. Wet carpets must be dried quickly. I’ll explain why.

Imagine: You have a busy day and you spill something. “I will deal with it tomorrow,” you think. It’s a situation we have all experienced, right? Now, here’s a twist. As you snuggle under your sheets in bed, your carpet throws an event – a mould and mildew celebration. I can assure you that this is not a party you would want to attend.

Molds, these tiny, sneaky organisms, flourish in damp environments. In as little as 48 hours, mold can start growing in a humid environment. The fungi not only look unsightly, but their characteristic musty scent can also easily invade your home. But putting aside their unsightly appearance and musty smell, the real danger is in the health risk they pose.

Breathing in mold can cause health problems. Mold spores can trigger asthma or allergies attacks, or exacerbate existing symptoms. It can also cause headaches, fatigue and respiratory problems even if the person does not have any of these conditions. Mildew poses the same dangers as mold.

It’s not just mold that can grow in carpets. Spores can spread through the air and settle on your carpet, other areas in your home or, dare we say, your personal belongings. This beautiful leather handbag that you love? You’re right, it could become a mould magnet. Your favorite shoe? You can’t wear them.
